Film natočený podle skutečné události líčí dramatické okolnosti hromadného útěku občanů NDR přes vnitroněmeckou hranici. V souvislosti s neustále posilovanou ostrahou západní hranice NDR a pod hrozbou nuceného přesídlení se rozhodne téměř polovina vsi jménem Böseckendorf v říjnu roku 1961 přejít hranici se SRN. Jde o více než padesát obyvatel, které represivní socialistický režim doslova donutí k útěku přes hranici, na níž se střílí.
