Filmpremiere „Liegen Lernen“ (04.09.2008)
Film: Speed Racer (2008)
Obsah:
Digitálními efekty nadupaná akční sci-fi jízda z továrny bratrů Wachovských, tvůrců nezapomenutelného Matrixu, představuje talentovaného Speeda (Emil Hirsch), který se účastní nebezpečného automobilového závodu nejen kvůli touze po vítězství.
Nápad adaptovat pro film legendární japonský animovaný seriál Speed Racer zrál v hlavách bratrů Wachowských, autorů nezapomenutelného Matrixu, řadu let. K jeho realizaci nakonec došlo v roce 2008 v podobě vysokovoltážní, špičkovými triky nabyté a stylové futuristické akce s Emilem Hirschem v hlavní roli.

Christian Oliver Exclusive Interview (30.01.2007)
Christian Oliver is a Good German this year. The German-born actor can be seen in the George Clooney and Cate Blanchett film, The Good German, in January 2007.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Tell us about your upcoming film, The Good German.
Tell us about your upcoming film, The Good German.
CHRISTIAN OLIVER:
It’s a very, very special film, I think. In some ways, it grows on you. I’m not being biased, usually it’s hard for me to watch my films. I really, really enjoyed this movie. It’s great to see a year later, because I’ve had the most amazing time shooting and making the movie, and to see it a year later and have the feeling that we really made the movie. To be part of that kind of movie, I’ve obviously had bigger roles, more screen time, but just being part of something like this, was fun. The way it was done, the way it was shot, it was really great all around. It was with great people, and being part of that was fun.

How would you explain, without giving away too much of it, [what] this movie is about?
How would you explain, without giving away too much of it, [what] this movie is about?
CHRISTIAN OLIVER:
People are either going to hate it or love it. I think people will really love it because they have already a certain love for film noir, and they have a certain love for black and white, and they understand what that medium means. I think the hardest thing when you watch the movie is, when you see the first ten minutes, it’s so different, and I love that. It’s beautiful that it’s so different. We’re just used and used to watch[ing] movies differently today. You go into the movie, the first ten minutes everything blows up, crazy music. This movie is just like 1945 film noir, Casablanca, Hitchcock kind of feel to it. It’s like film noir and it has that style to it. It’s black and white. When you think of that, for me, it’s glamorous. It’s so different. Black and white makes everybody look better, so I’m very happy about that.

The movie is called The Good German and I am the good German. It’s a great role because it’s literally a key role in it, because everybody’s looking for this guy. Everybody’s looking for Emil Brandt. Everybody’s trying to find this guy. I play Cate Blanchett’s husband, she’s amazing, such a great experience working with her. She [is], in my opinion, one of the most talented actors of our time. So for me to get to film with her everyday was just a gift and very inspiring. The nicest person you can imagine, and no egos, and it was really working together, and being part of that, felt really nice. And when you see her in the movie, she is just stunning. It feels like you’re not even watching Cate Blanchett, it feels like you’re watching like an old movie.
THE STAR SCOOP:
When you’re on the set with some of these greats of our time, are you trying to learn from them?
When you’re on the set with some of these greats of our time, are you trying to learn from them?
CHRISTIAN OLIVER:
Oh, absolutely. I’d be stupid if I wouldn’t, you know? It’s the best paid acting class you can probably go to. It was great, because they really made me feel like I was part of that. It gives you tremendous confidence, you know? To see that they treat you as one of them. It was just all of us, we’re all on this road together to make a good movie. There were no egos involved. You hear all these nightmarish stories about Hollywood and their stars, and the egos. [You’ve got] to hold your own and blah, blah, blah. It was just the most refreshing thing, and I think a big learning experience for me was really how beautiful it is to see people on that level. It can’t get higher than that, professional people, and you know, passionate, and [who] love what they do, and have fun [with] what they do. I think that’s what I really took away, to see how George Clooney has such passion for what he does, and these people with a lot of integrity and passion for what they do. They believe in what they do, and it’s fun to be part of that. I’m still in that naive world where I feel that’s how film making should be done, and then to see that on a level, a huge studio level, that movies are still created that way, was just refreshing and really rewarding, and worth all the struggle…It’s a team effort. That’s when the magic happens.

CHRISTIAN OLIVER:
I wanted to be on the set everyday, waking up in the morning, didn’t want to leave at night. We wrapped early every day because he doesn’t do a lot of takes, you know? It’s like three takes and you’re done. One or two, I mean, you’re done. It was like, ahh, please can we just do a little more? I want to stay. It was just a great, great environment, and so rare. Usually after a long day, and especially in the movie industry, it’s like, let me out of here, I want to go home, let’s get this done. It was great to have that, and now I think the most important lesson to me was, take all of that, and take it to anything else that I work on. If it’s with Joe Schmoe or George Clooney, it doesn’t matter, you should still have the same work ethics, and you should still have the same respect for all the people you work with. I was just humbled to see that these people do. It was great that they let me be part of that.

When does the movie actually come out?
CHRISTIAN OLIVER:
The 15th [of December]. It’s doing one of those, three city, on the 15th, and then going wide on the 22nd [of December], and then they’re going extra wide in January, I think. Awards season, Oscars, all the awards, and it’d be great if The Good German would be acknowledged for what it really was, to recreate that old feel, and to recapture that. We used the lenses from back then, and we shot it on the back lot in Burbank, the way movies were shot on the back lot back then. The whole movie takes place in 1945 in Berlin. For me the movie, it’s so unique because it does take place in 1945, but it’s kind of timeless. It shows a different side of war, it shows the aftermath, and it shows who is good and who is bad. I think, the title, „The Good German“ is like, who is good here, and who is bad. Unless you’re open and unless you’re willing to watch a movie that is making you think, maybe go back and see history and turn over every stone, and then this movie you will not understand it. It’s very intelligent, and that’s what I love about it. It’s very complex. Every character in it has its demons, and everybody is fighting their demons and everybody is trying to [do] the best they can. Sometimes the best is not good enough. It’s not all black and white, that’s a funny thing because we’re working in black and white, there’s a lot of gray area.

Once people see this role, it’s going to get you some nice recognition. It has the potential to make some changes for you, career-wise. Do you have any guesses about the impact the film will have for you professionally, once it comes out?

CHRISTIAN OLIVER:
At this point, I’m just trying to enjoy the whole impact of it, and the moment of it. We shot the moment a year ago, and I’ve had the greatest year so far. I think if you get to work on a level like that, if you get to work with people that inspire you in so many different aspects, it doesn’t really matter. Everything else is just gravy. The whole experience will always be with me and I have that forever, you know? It’s like in my heart and my soul, and I truly feel that that’s something I will always have. Now, it’s out in the world, and you’ve got to let that go. It was such a great journey, and now it’s time to let it go and then, you get vulnerable because you open yourself up to criticism, you open yourself up to people not liking it, people loving it. But that’s the beauty about filmmaking, and the beauty about taking risks. Everybody in this, everybody wanted to take a risk, and everybody wanted to take a leap. It was even more rewarding to see how much they all put themselves on the line, and how much it really meant for them, and to become part of that was just such a great experience. What the movie is going to do now, it’s going to do no matter what my expectations are. I saw the movie, I am very happy with the movie, I think it looks beautiful. There are amazing performances. It’s so unique and different from what’s out there everyday. I’m very, very happy that I was part of it. Whatever is going to come now out of it, is going to come. For me it’s more of a piece of art.

I’m very excited to see what everything else will bring. I started producing my own movies. I produced a movie called Subject Two, like a year ago and we got accepted at the Sundance Film Festival this year. Then, that was such a great fun little success story, that I just finished another [movie] with friends as well, called Ready or Not, a comedy. We shot in Mexico and Los Angeles. It’s [being] edited right now. So, hopefully, like in six months we’ll be done with that.
THE STAR SCOOP:
It sounds like 2007 will be a pretty big year for you.
It sounds like 2007 will be a pretty big year for you.
CHRISTIAN OLIVER:
If it’s as fun and enjoyable as this year was, it doesn’t even get more exciting. I just want to work…I want to work on good stuff, you know, I want to work with good people, or on great material, and if possible with good people and good material…whatever it is, you’ve got to be true to yourself. I don’t expect everything to be the next Good German right now, but I definitely want to work with the same work ethic and the same integrity the way I worked with The Good German, and I want to work on all the future projects, no matter what they are, like that. We don’t really have that much control over what we do in this business, but we have control, not over the outcome, but we have control over what we do, and how we do it and with who we do it…No matter what we do, try to have as much fun as possible, and you know, grow as a person. In my life, I’m trying to grow and take acting as part of that growing process as a person. Besides all that intelligence talk, I’m also somebody who is crazy enough to just jump out an airplane and skydiving, snowboarding, motorcycles. I love adrenaline. I love the thrill. I love to live on the edge, so to speak. I enjoy life.
